Protect your teeth!

You will need the following:

1 x Can of Coca Cola or a similar brand, but it must not be diet
3 x eggs (uncooked)
3 x glasses 1 x Tube of toothpaste
1 x Cloth or kitchen roll for drying

Clear glass
Three chickens eggs
X-ray image of a jaw

Why?

In this experiment, the eggshell represents the enamel on your teeth. Toothpaste protects your teeth from discolouration and decay.

The water is our control/ comparison. Toothpaste has a chemical called fluoride in it. Fluoride mixes with saliva to help protect your teeth.

Step 1

You will need to make three labels:
1. Coke
2. Coke and Toothpaste
3. Water

Step 2

Cover one egg in toothpaste.

Step 3

Put water in your water glass and coke into the 2 coke glasses.

Step 4

Gently place an egg in each glass without breaking them, making sure your toothpaste egg goes into one of the coke glasses.

Step 5

Leave eggs in there for 12 hours.

Step 6

Remove eggs and gently rinse under cold water. Pat dry and observe your results. What do you notice about your eggs?

Chromatography flowers!

You will need the following:
Kitchen roll, one sheet makes one flower
A few drops of food dye, colours of your choice or felt tip pens
A cup or glass

Chromatography flowers in a glass you can make at home

Step 1

Twist the bottom third of the kitchen roll to make a flower shape

Step 2

Place dots of food dye or felt tip pens around the top of the twist.

Step 3

Place water into a cup about 1cm deep.

Step 4

Place flower into water making sure ink (dye) does not touch the water.

Step 5

When kitchen roll soaks up all water then take out of water and leave it to dry.

Step 6

Balloon car

You will need the following:

1 x Small juice carton
1 x Roll of sellotape
3 x Straws
1 x Balloon
2 x Elastic bands
4 x bottle caps
2 x toothpicks
1 x Pair of compasses
2 x 2p coins this will vary depending on the size of the balloon

Step 1

Put one end of the straw inside of the balloon and attach it using an elastic band.

Step 2

Using a pair of compasses carefully make a small hole in the centre of each bottle cap.

Push the toothpicks fully through the juice carton to make the wheel axles.

Step 4

Attach the bottle caps onto the toothpicks via the holes you made, be careful of the pointy ends of the toothpicks they can be quite sharp!

Step 5

Using sellotape secure the straw with the balloon sitting at the back of the car, to the top of the carton.

Step 6

Inflate the balloon by blowing down the straw and see what happens. If the car tips over due to the balloon, stick your 2p coins to the other end to counter balance the car.

Step 7
