McScience Mission Statement
McScience has a mission to cultivate and enhance scientific knowledge within our community, empowering individuals to understand, engage with, and contribute to the world of science. By fostering a culture of curiosity, critical thinking, and discovery, we aim to inspire lifelong learners and problem solvers. Through accessible education, collaborative research, and innovative outreach programs, we strive to enrich our community with the tools and understanding needed to address local and global challenges. Our commitment is to promote scientific literacy, bridge diverse perspectives, and build a foundation for informed decision-making and progress. Together, we envision a community where science thrives as a force for positive change and collective well-being.
Making Science More Engaging
Having worked in education, I realised that science needed to be more captivating. Thus, the idea of McScience was born - creating educational material that makes science more interesting and relatable. Growing up, I had a passion for science, but often found it hard to stay engaged in class as the lessons were not always relevant to real-life applications in the industry.
Making Lessons During Lockdown
During Covid, I was making lessons like many teachers, and I started to make images and videos for this. I always enjoy making science jokes to my students as well, and this is when I got thinking about social media and how McScience is to be different from other companies.
The History of Science
So I started putting the two things together. I also wanted to tell the history of science by emphasising the scientists that didn't get credit for their work, as without their contribution, we wouldn't have made so many scientific breakthroughs.
Andy McCarron | Owner, Director of McScience
I was the subject lead at a STEAM college based in Plymouth with over nine years of teaching experience, and I have worked in education for over twelve years. I teach all sciences and work hard to provide high-quality lessons linked directly to real life and employment. Born and raised in Plymouth, I grew up across the city struggling with education due to having ADHD, Autism and Dyslexia. I worked hard throughout college and university to gain a degree with honours, which I am very proud of. I believe education can be different, and with the right support, all students should enjoy what they learn! 2 Years ago, I started having blackouts, then had a pacemaker installed. This meant, for health reasons, I had to leave mainstream education. Now I support from the other side, raising aspirations and providing engaging content for people of all ages.
Lizzie Lay | Forest School Lead | Director of McScience
Lizzie is a creative, community-minded leader with a strong background in education and outdoor learning. Originally from Preston, she has brought her energy and experience to Plymouth over the last three years, quickly becoming a valued part of the local education scene. Before moving to Plymouth, Lizzie ran her own Forest School in Liskeard and led summer sessions for Cornwall Council, combining her love for nature with a passion for child-led learning. She also served on the PTA at Stuart Road Primary School and is an active member of the Liskeard and Looe Ladies Circle—demonstrating her commitment to community, connection, and making a difference. Now home educating her daughter and actively involved in a local home ed group, Lizzie brings a unique perspective to the McScience team—rooted in creativity, inclusivity, and hands-on learning. Lizzie is currently studying for a BA (Hons) in Painting, Drawing and Printmaking at Arts University Plymouth. Her artistic flair, thoughtful leadership, and lived experience in alternative education make her a fantastic addition to our board of directors. I’m incredibly excited to have her on this journey with us.
Iain Penrose | Director of McScience
Iain Penrose brings over 36 years of experience at NatWest, where he built a respected career as a Relationship Manager in the banking industry. His deep expertise spans portfolio management, commercial and real estate lending—including property development—and strategic business development. Throughout his career, Iain has demonstrated a consistent ability to guide clients and organisations toward sustainable growth. His wealth of knowledge and practical insight have made him a trusted advisor in both corporate and community settings. I chose Iain as a director of because his advice is invaluable. His ability to see the bigger picture, ask the right questions, and steer conversations with clarity and purpose has been a tremendous asset to the development of our mission and long-term vision.
Amy Warmington | Maths Tutor
Amy is an experienced secondary maths teacher with over 12 years in education, with a strong track record of helping students build confidence and develop a secure understanding of maths. She has worked with a wide range of students of varying abilities and is passionate about making learning clear, accessible, and supportive. Born and raised in Plymouth, Amy trained at the University of Plymouth and has taught in a Plymouth school since graduating. She is passionate about maths education and the future opportunities it can unlock, believing every student can succeed with the right support. Amy chose to step away from the classroom to be a more present mum and give her children the best version of herself, including supporting a child with additional needs. She now continues her love of teaching through tutoring with a calm, personalised, engaging approach. Her happy place is anywhere by the sea, and she enjoys spending time with family at Whitsands Bay beach.
Davy McGregor | Advisor
Davy enjoyed a 12-year career in professional rugby before moving into education and business. During his rugby career, he founded ERA-FIT Ltd, a successful bespoke gym design company delivering installations across the UK. Growing up in rural Ireland, Davy developed a strong connection to nature and animal conservation. His passion for education, business, and the outdoors led to the creation of Moor to Life—an initiative offering a fresh approach to learning, with a focus on nature's wellbeing benefits. He values the power of teamwork and positive environments, something he saw firsthand in rugby and later as Operations Manager in a SEMH school, where he launched an enterprise division for students. Family values and a strong sense of empathy guide Davy's work. As Safeguarding Lead, he gained deeper insight into the challenges many young people face. Moor to Life, Davy aims to inspire others to realise their potential and embrace the idea that there’s always more to life.
Jess McCarron | Web Designer
Jess is a talented graphic designer with a background in education. As the creative mind behind our stunning web pages, she brings fresh, thoughtful design to everything she creates. Currently studying for a degree in Graphic Design at Arts University Plymouth, Jess balances academic excellence with real-world experience through her own creative business, Jessie Makes. I’ve known Jess since the age of four, and her creativity, dedication, and eye for detail have always stood out. Her understanding of educational environments, combined with her artistic skillset, makes her an invaluable part of the McScience team—ensuring our resources are not only effective but beautifully designed and engaging.
McScience is for everyone!
McScience is for everyone, not just those in education. I post material on social media for anyone to interact with when they see it. The material includes jokes, discussions, and questions such as 'what's under my microscope?' and 'What am I drawing?'.
